3 Top Spots to Use Your German Language Skills

If you love to travel and you are a German speaker, you can combine these two interests to explore the world. While you may feel that you are limited to living in only German-speaking countries, there are many options available elsewhere where you can utilise these skills. As German language skills are in such high demand due to Germany’s prominence in international trade, the world is basically your oyster. I have chosen 3 top places that you can emigrate to, to embark on a German-speaking adventure!

1. Nothing’s feta than Athens

With a vast offering of German-speaking jobs and internships in Athens, this is a perfect place to settle down. If you weren’t already aware, Greece is blessed with beautiful weather and during the summer, temperatures can reach upwards of 35°C. With beautiful architecture, including the renowned Parthenon, and a rich history dating back to around 3000BC, Athens is one of the oldest cities in the world. The cost of living is considerably lower than other European capitals – approximately 33% less expensive than London! Greek nightlife is always lively with many locals going out to bars and clubs, many of which are open well into the early hours of the morning. If you’re seeking a more chilled vibe however, there are quieter neighbourhoods and small villages to enjoy peace and quiet. Aside from the incredible sights and history, Athens is also acclaimed for it’s amazing food. Traditional moussaka, saganaki and souvlaki are a must-try – if you have a sweet tooth, baklava is the perfect treat.

2. Oh my Gaudi, go to Barcelona

Barcelona is a multicultural hub with a rich Spanish culture. As so many expats, particularly from Germany, have moved to Barcelona, it has adopted many cultures to celebrate. And with the German community within the city constantly growing, it is becoming more and more like a home from home with a huge demand for German speakers. The Spanish architect, Antoni Gaudi, was responsible for creating the distinctive Barcelona landscape. In addition to Gaudi’s immense work, there’s also the Gothic Quarter that is equally as fascinating. Mirroring the overall eclectic feel of the city, Barcelona offers a fusion of Catalan and Spanish food, with additional influences of flavours from other cities. Paella and patatas bravas are delicious and for a sweet end to the meal, crema catalana is perfect.

3. Czech out Prague

The combination of stunning architecture, fairy-tale scenery, and (insanely) cheap beer, Prague is a top choice for German-speaking expats. Also known as ‘City of a Hundred Spires’ the city’s skyline is dominated by beautiful cathedrals. Prague is home to one of Europe’s oldest bridges, Charles Bridge, which was built between 1357 and 1402 and is decorated with 30 statues depicting saints. When you get hungry, there’s a never-ending array of dishes to try including goulash, dumplings, and strudel.

Languages enrich your life for the better, and this is evident in the incredible places that you can use your German-speaking abilities. Don’t wait around, go and discover the opportunities that are awaiting you!
