Wanderlust
/ˈwɒndəlʌst/ • noun
An immense desire to travel the world
I’m pretty sure that after living through a pandemic, everyone has wanderlust, if you didn’t already. The thought of stepping onto a plane and travelling somewhere, anywhere, is too enticing to express. It’s been a while since we were able to pose the question: where to next? But don’t worry about feeling indecisive – I’ve got you covered.
Germany. Home to a rich culture, history, and beautiful architecture, it’s basically a no-brainer. There’s something for everyone. In case you’re not convinced, and needed further persuasion, I’ve got 3 hidden gems that even the locals don’t know about.
I’m sure that after staying cooped up in your house in isolation, the last place you’d want to be is packed tourist attractions, constantly worrying about the possible spread of germs. While it’s becoming increasingly safer to travel, I don’t think any of us can seem to shake off that feeling of dread niggling away at us of the possibility of catching something. But with this mini travel guide, you’ll be catching a flight – not COVID.
1. Lichtenstein Castle – for the fairy tale lovers
Around an hour’s drive south of Stuttgart, the capital city of the state of Baden-Württemberg, this castle is perched on a cliff overlooking the beautiful Echaz valley. The original castle, built around 1200, was destroyed twice. The current structure was built from scratch in the 1800s with a more modern twist: a neo-Gothic design. After it was purchased from King Frederick I of Württemberg by his cousin, Count Wilhelm von Urach, the Gothic-Revival architecture mirrored the Count’s love of medieval art, as well as the novel, Lichtenstein by Wilhelm Hauff. Offering guided tours (pamphlets in English are available however the whole tour is given in German) 10 months out of the year, this castle is the quintessential place to live out your Rapunzel dreams.
2. Lake Schrecksee – for a scenic Instagram photo-op
If you’re in the mood for more exploring, take a hike to Lake Schrecksee. Situated in the German Alps, the lake is renowned for its picturesque scenery and views. However, with a 7.7km hiking route and elevation of 6,000ft, it’s not your typical walk in the park! Although it is the perfect place to whip your camera out, take some beautiful shots and even practice social distancing in the process. Get your walking boots ready and enjoy the mystical wonders of Lake Schrecksee.
3. White sandy beaches in Prerow – perfect for a chilled day
Located on the German Baltic coast in Mecklenburg, the town of Prerow is a 3hr drive from Berlin and has a population of just over 1,600 – you can’t get any more hidden than that! The juxtaposition of charming, thatched roof cottages and sandy beaches can make you feel like you’re in the English countryside one minute, and exotic Bora Bora the next. The best of both worlds I’d say!
While I think I’ve named some pretty amazing places. whatever you decide to do in Germany, you’ll be guaranteed an unforgettable experience in the heart of Europe. So, book your flights and enjoy!
